Palma’s Christmas Eve sparkles with its Matines de Navidad, one of the island’s most cherished traditions. Every 24th December, the Cathedral of Majorca hosts this historic and emotional celebration, featuring the much-anticipated Song of the Sibyl (El Cant de la Sibil·la, in Catalan), which has been declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. This medieval chant is solemnly performed by a young man wearing a tunic and carrying a sword, and fills the cathedral with a special atmosphere. Attending the Matines is like travelling back in time to a centuries-old tradition where liturgy, music and Gothic architecture come together to create an authentic Majorcan Christmas experience. It is an unmissable event for anyone visiting Palma at this time of year.
