Palma takes on a new look when winter rolls around. The streets are filled with Christmas lights, creating a magical atmosphere that invites you to take a leisurely stroll. Festive light displays line avenues, squares and narrow streets, transforming the historic centre into the perfect setting for enjoying the city as evening falls.
During this time of year, Palma stages its traditional Nativity Scene Trail (Ruta de Belenes), which is one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Museums, churches, shops and cultural organisations open their doors to display nativity scenes, some of which are authentic works of art with centuries of history.
Winter is the ideal time to explore Palma at a leisurely pace. Monuments such as the Catedral de Mallorca, the Palau de l’Almudaina, the Castell de Bellver and the courtyards of the stately homes in the old town can be explored calmly, unlike during the summer months.
Museums such as Es Baluard, thel Museu de Mallorca o Casal Solleric hold exhibitions that visitors can delve into to learn more about local culture and art. This is the perfect time to enjoy the city at a more relaxed pace and experience its authentic character.
Winter is the season to taste the special flavours Palma has to offer. It’s time for:
· Hot chocolate: the perfect companion for Majorcan pastries in cafés and symbolic establishments.
· Traditional sweet treats: ensaïmadas, buñuelos, cocas de patata or cuartos, which sweeten the chilly weather.
· Tapas and Majorcan cuisine: home-cooked dishes and traditional recipes in cosy restaurants in the old town.
In addition, municipal markets such as Santa Catalina, l’Olivar and Pere Garau— showcase seasonal local produce in winter, perfect for discovering the true flavour of the island.
December is also a perfect month for shopping. Palma has everything from local boutiques and traditional crafts to international brands. During the festive season, the city is home to charming Christmas markets where you can discover artisan products, decorations and typical cuisine.
Even in winter, the climate in Palma remains mild, so you can still enjoy the outdoors. Strolling along the seafront promenade with views of the Mediterranean, venturing into Bellver Forest, losing yourself in the city’s most authentic neighbourhoods or enjoying a quiet morning by the sea are special experiences to be enjoyed during these months.
From late November to January, Palma bursts into life with a festive programme that combines tradition and culture. The Christmas season gets underway with the Christmas lights being switched on and a spectacular event that brightens up the city. After that, there is something for everyone, with cultural activities, the traditional nativity scene trail, concerts and endless family activities to enjoy over Christmas.
In January, the eagerly awaited Three Wise Men Parade takes to the streets in one of the best-known processions in the Balearic Islands, and shortly afterwards the city celebrates Sant Sebastià, the patron saint of Palma, with music, food and a festive atmosphere in the squares and neighbourhoods.
Palma in winter is light, tranquillity, culture, flavour and tradition. A lively city that combines its historical heritage with the Mediterranean warmth of its people.
