SUMMARY:Fiesta de l'Estendard
DESCRIPTION:Palma’s Festa de l’Estendard\, which takes place on 31 December in the Plaza de Cort\, is one of Europe’s oldest civic ceremonies and Majorca’s longest-running public commemoration. The celebration commemorates King James I’s arrival in 1229 and the end of Muslim rule\, ushering in the Kingdom of Majorca.  \nIt features deep medieval roots\, a non-religious civic nature\, and its central symbol: the Royal Standard of the Conquest. For over 700 years\, it has evolved to reflect new contexts\, but it retains its essence of honouring Majorca’s origins.  \nThe schedule includes the raising of the Standard\, a medieval procession to La Seu\, mass and traditional dances\, and a return to Cort followed by a final lifting of the Standard and reciting the poem\, La Colcada. The festival stands as a powerful symbol of historical memory\, civic identity\, and cultural continuity\, blending medieval ritual with modern ceremony.  \n

SUMMARY:Matines de Navidad - El Canto de la Sibila
DESCRIPTION:Palma’s Christmas Eve sparkles with its Matines de Navidad\, one of the island’s most cherished traditions. Every 24th December\, the Cathedral of Majorca hosts this historic and emotional celebration\, featuring the much-anticipated Song of the Sibyl (El Cant de la Sibil·la\, in Catalan)\, which has been declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. This medieval chant is solemnly performed by a young man wearing a tunic and carrying a sword\, and fills the cathedral with a special atmosphere. Attending the Matines is like travelling back in time to a centuries-old tradition where liturgy\, music and Gothic architecture come together to create an authentic Majorcan Christmas experience. It is an unmissable event for anyone visiting Palma at this time of year.

SUMMARY:La Beata
DESCRIPTION:The Beata Festival of Palma takes place every year on the third Saturday of October in honor of Saint Catalina Thomàs (1531–1574)\, popularly known as the “Beata” or “Beateta\,” patron saint of Valldemossa and a central figure of Mallorcan devotion since her beatification in 1792. \nThe procession always begins at the church of Santa Magdalena\, where the incorrupt body of the saint is venerated. Each year\, a young girl is chosen to represent the “beateta” and rides in the spectacular 19th-century Triumphal Chariot\, joined by other carts with participants in traditional costumes\, folk groups\, and performances of the Mallorcan ball de bot dance. Palma’s streets come alive with colorful gegants (giant figures) and xeremiers (bagpipers)\, creating a unique atmosphere of tradition\, culture\, and popular devotion.

SUMMARY:Changing of the Guard at Almudaina Palace
DESCRIPTION:Since September 2009\, weather permitting\, on the last Saturday of each month at 12:00 noon (except in August and December)\, the famous Changing of the Honor Guard takes place in front of the Royal Palace of La Almudaina\, performed by soldiers of the Palma 47 Light Infantry Regiment. \nThe uniqueness of this event lies in the soldiers’ historical uniforms: until 2018 they wore the outfits of the volunteer corps created in 1808\, and since 2019\, they wear uniforms reproducing those of the Spanish Infantry of King Charles III. This ceremony recalls the old guard changes of the Palace\, when it was the official residence of the Viceroys of Mallorca. \nIn 2025\, the ceremony will be held on: January 25\, February 22\, March 29\, April 26\, May 31\, June 28\, July 26\, September 27\, October 25 and November 29.
