Iglesia de Sant Miquel (Saint Michael’s) parish church

First a mosque, then a church

The Iglesia de Sant Miquel (Saint Michael’s) church  is one of the four oldest parish churches in Palma, alongside those of Santa Eulalia, Sant Jaume and Santa Creu. It is named after the patron saint Miquel de Fabra, confessor of King Jaume I, the conqueror.

The church is believed to be located on what was once the site of the largest mosque in the city of Madina Mayurqa, during the Islamisation of the island. From the original Gothic church, only the façade has been preserved, which features the high quality image of Sant Miquel and the square bell tower. The church was rebuilt in the 17th century in the Baroque style.

This parish church is also a shrine to the ‘Mare de Déu de la Salut’, patron saint of Palma and highly revered by Mallorcans.
