Nuestra Señora del Socorro (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) church

The Baroque period at its most elegant

Señora del Socorro (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) church rises above one of Palma’s emerging neighbourhoods, Sa Gerreria, one of the most symbolic neighbourhoods in Palma Alta. The plaza in which it is situated is both pleasant and quiet.

In the church, which is worthy of a visit alone, the baroque-style main altarpiece stands out; made in the 18th century, it was designed by the famous artist Juan Francisco Aragón. There are also several interesting Marian sculptures from the 15th to the 18th centuries, such as the Nuestra Señora del Socorro itself (made from alabaster stone), as well as the Pilar, Esperanza and Itria. The image of the Sleeping Virgin is another highlight.

This church, dedicated to Señora del Socorro (Our Lady of Perpetual Help), belongs to the Order of the Augustinian monks, who arrived in Mallorca in the 15th century and had their first monastery outside the walls. In the 17th century, they commissioned the construction of the current convent, which grew around the old church of Nuestra Señora de Gracia. The church has a single nave and two side chapels with upper corridors enclosed by balustrades.

Inside is the monumental chapel of San Nicolás de Tolentino, designed by the sculptor Francisco Herrera. The chapel has an extended octagonal floor and contains seven altars. Its most spectacular feature is the heavily decorated dome, inspired by the visual art ideology of horror vacui, and is one of the most expressive examples of Baroque art in Mallorca.
